Principal Image
Zao Daigongen
Zao Daigongen, the principal deity of Shugendo, is said to have revealed himself to the ascetic En no Gyoja about 1,300 years ago. Gongen means “a deity appearing in a provisional form.” Zao Daigongen is the united form of three Buddhas — Shaka Nyorai, who saves us in our past lives; Senju Kannon Bosatsu, who saves us in this life; and Miroku Bosatsu, who will save us in lives to come — appearing in this world to save all people.
