Jigenji Temple – Seasonal Letters “Always with a Smile — Taking a Breather”

This time of year is often called “Uzuki,” but did you know it has another name, “Seiwazuki”? As its characters suggest, “seiwa” means clear skies and peaceful calm.

In May, the month of fragrant breezes, the village of Akiu where Jigenji stands is wrapped in newborn green. Watching those who come for the Goma fire ritual or to pray, we see them gazing at the sky and the trees, smiling happily.

Around May 2, the 88th day counting from Risshun, is “Hachijū-hachiya,” the Eighty-Eighth Night. With the peak of tea picking just ahead, the thought that we can soon enjoy the first tea of the year almost brings its young, fresh fragrance drifting to us already.

Each year, at a Kiyomizu-ware kiln in Kyoto, the Dai-Ajari writes his thoughts by hand on teacups, one by one. This year’s words are “Itsumo egao de” — “always with a smile.” Every time you drink your tea, you will see these words and take a relaxing breather. We would be delighted if they bring a smile to your face.

The teacups are available at Jigenji’s amulet counter, and we also ship throughout Japan. (Please note that the number of teacups is limited.)

— This Month’s Words from Dai-Ajari Ryojun Shionuma —

No one can live alone, and there are times when each of us must go on living while carrying hardship, pain, and all kinds of uncertainty.

It is precisely at such times that we should not become pessimistic, thinking that we alone are suffering. Remind yourself that there are people in this world who are doing their best while bearing even greater pain and sorrow. Hold a caring heart that knows we are all living together, and keep a smile on your face.
