Seasonal Letter, October: “What Curry Taught Me”
Jigenji Temple – Seasonal Letters “What Curry Taught Me”

Autumn has arrived — the season of hearty appetites, as we say in Japan. At Jigenji, curry often appears on the menu for lunch on the days we perform the goma fire ritual. We cook enough for about twenty people, so it is no small task. Sauté slowly, and wait. Even here, there is an important lesson.

— This Month’s Words from the Daiajari —
Sometimes, there is no need to rush or hurry. Even when something can be done quickly, try taking your time on purpose. You may find that it gains a remarkable depth. I have spent years walking the mountains without pause, but these days I feel as though the curry is telling me, “Time spent waiting matters, too.”
